Sunday Longplay - Bucky O'Hare (NES)

This week on Sunday Longplay is a game I've wanted to play on this channel for a long time but never got around to until now. Welcome to Bucky O'Hare on the Nintendo Entertainment System!

This game is another example of a licensed game done right. It's based on a comic series of the same name and its cartoon adaptation Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars. The game starts with the Toad Air Marshall kidnapping Bucky's crew members and imprisoning them on four separate planets, which serve as the first four levels of the game which can be beaten in any order a la Mega Man. After saving a crew member, they become playable characters that you can switch to at any time with the Select button a la Castlevania 3. Each character has their own weapons and special powers that you can charge up by holding the B Button. Bucky can jump super high (kind of like the squat jump mechanic in Super Mario Bros. 2), Deadeye can climb walls, Blinky can hover, Willy can charge a super powerful laser blast, and Jenny can fire off a big ball of energy that you can steer into enemies with the D-pad. Each crew member has their own power meter that can be upgraded by picking up P tokens scattered throughout the levels.

Once the first four stages are done, Bucky's ship gets sucked into the Toad Armada's mothership where they once again get separated. After rescuing everyone again, the crew makes a run for it through the Salvage Chute into the center of the ship where they blow the ship up and then escape.

I had never played this game as a kid, but I was inspired to pick it up after listening to @Nestalgica 's metal cover of the Salvage Chute theme. The rest of the music in this game is top-notch as well, and the gameplay is crisp too. There really isn't anything bad I can say about this game except maybe the cheap one-hit deaths can get a little crazy especially in the endgame.
