The Palace Bridge is spread across the Bolshaya Neva and it is one of two bridges connecting the Central part of the city (from the Winter Palace) and Vasilievsky Island (at the Rostral Column on the Exchange Square). The Palace Bridge is a five—span, metal, arched bridge with a two-wing drawbridge in the center of the bridge and is similar in design to the Exchange Bridge. Dvortsovy and Birzhevoy are two bridges that complement each other symmetrically, organically fitting into the architectural ensemble of the Arrow of Vasilievsky Island.
With a modest celebration, the Palace Bridge was opened on December 23, 1916.

The bridge got its name because of the Winter Palace located next to it. With the advent of Soviet power, the Palace Bridge was renamed Republican In 1944, its historical name was returned to the bridge.
