Downtown Nashville, TN Tornado April 16, 1998
The tornado started in West Nashville, near West Meade, then followed along Interstate 40 and Charlotte to the Capitol area. Then it traveled into downtown Nashville and across the Cumberland River into East Nashville and touched down once again in the Hermitage area. With speeds of 158 to 206 mph, the tornado in East Nashville was rated a F3, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Bobby Boyd.
More than 300 buildings, including the state Capitol, were damaged by the tornado in downtown Nashville.
