FOSS Fun Wednesday 23: No More Unreal Online, WINE on Wayland Better, and More Hotfixes for Heroic

FFW 23.1- Bad Guy Epic... Sad Day

Epic is killing off old school online multiplayer as well as store availability for a number of their classic games, including everything prior to Unreal Tournament 3. Why would they do this? They’re consolidating and moving whatever they can onto their new AIO Epic Online Services setup. I get why they are doing this, but it still sucks for anyone who enjoys these old games on their computer and don’t own a physical copy, and/or someone you can play with via a LAN game. The other thing here is that these changes go into effect on January 24, 2023. The community may try to step in and provide solutions for this, but no guarantees there. Here’s hoping, right?

These are the words assigned to each of the 4 weeks of Advent. First we walk through the hope of Messiah (primarily through the prophesies in the Old Testament, largely Davidic [in the Psalms] and in Isaiah), then we look at the peace promised, then the joy of promises fulfilled, then the Love that is Jesus. We hope for the fulfillment of all of God’s promises, not just the birth of Jesus. This allows us to have peace, even in the midst of a hectic and confusing life. It also teaches us that we can have joy, no matter what we walk through in this life, as Anna and Simeon did as they waited for the consolation of Israel. We also learn that we can experience God’s love for us, even in the midst of hard times (like right now). Then, we have Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, to round it all out with joy and a solid resolution to the waiting for Jesus’ birth. Amen.

FFW 23.2: WINE on Wayland Is Getting Better

What’s new here?

· Updating drivers and APIs
· Prep work for WoW64 support
· Better Cross-process rendering to improve Chromium applications
· Improved support for dmabuf-feedback support which allows the compositor to directly access presentation information (resolution, windowed vs fullscreen, etc) to make those sorts of changes more seamless in WINE apps

FFW 23.3: More Hotfixes for the Heroic Launcher

New Features
· [macOS] Added support for game shortcuts (GamePage > 3 dots > Add Shortcut). They will be saved on the Home applications folder by default.
· [Linux/macOS] Added support for DXVK Limit FPS option.
· [macOS] A DMG for ARM64 for M1/M2 is now available to download on Github. (if a message of app being damaged shows up, run this command on the terminal: sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine | mdfind kMDItemCFBundleIdentifier = "*heroic"
Fixes

· Fix some sideloaded and GOG games not launching from SteamDeck because of a --skip-version-check flag being passed.
· Fix tray icon not properly updating the list of recent games
· Fix stuck GOG save games input
· [Linux/macOS] Fixed DXVK Installation
· [macOS] Fix Crossover not being found.
· [Linux] Fix Wine status not updating on Wine Manager after install/uninstall
· [macOS] Fixed Winetricks download URL and environmental variables.
· Some UI fixes
That is quite a number of new features and fixes. Good stuff for Mac users, and better quality of life for Linux and Steam Deck users, particularly around DXVK and WINE status updates. This should make Heroic that much more enjoyable to use, not that I do, but hey, good stuff, nonetheless.
