As part of its strategy to expand and diversify the tourism products in the Jordanian coastal city of Aqaba, The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) has developed a new diving site recently to increase the number of coral reef and marine life.
The ASEZA submerged the body of an out-of-service military transporter Hercules aircraft, which was donated by the Royal Jordanian Air Force, to provide another unique site for global diving fans.
The aircraft, which was used by the Royal Jordanian Air Force to transport soldiers and participated in many military and humanitarian missions, was scuttled and submerged in the southern beach shore of Aqaba where Jordanian authorities previously submerged a battle tank in the late 1990s.
The city of Aqaba is a world leading destination for the sport of diving and such initiatives will maintain its status and further attract local, regional and international tourists.
