The Sacred Ayahuasca Caverns, Carvernas Gallos de la Pena

Located deep wthinin the Ecuadorian Amazon, Cavernas Gallos de la Pena has been used by Inca and Kichwa people for shelter and sacred ayahuasca ceremonies for thousands of years. The caves are named after one of the most incredibe and unique birds in the Amazon, the giant, bright red, Andean cock of the rock. This rare, migratory bird comes to roost at the mouth of the caverns during mating season. Unfortunately, it was not mating season when we visited.

The tradition of holding ayhuasca cerremonies deep in the caverns continues to this day. The cavern is very stable and safe, with stalagtites and stalagmites, calcite crytals, gold and silver, as well as many artifacts. There is abundant wildlife both in and around the caverns.

Guest at our retreats have the option of visiting these caverns, and joining ceremony with local Kichwa shaman.
