Whittier, Alaska - The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel - Whittier Tunnel - Overlanding Alaska

I left Anchorage, Alaska direction Whittier under constant rain which had lasted for about three days and was scheduled to last another ten!! The drive to Whittier, Alaska is a beautiful drive and takes you through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel which was expanded in year 2000. Before this expansion, the only ways one could get to the cold war era town was with train, boat or airplane. Since vehicle traffic is no open, Whittier has become more of a tourist hub with big cruisers docking at its shore and bus loads of tourists entering Alaska. During the WWII, Whittier was the entry point for US soldiers who were stationed in Alaska. The interesting things about this town of about 200 people is that they all pretty much live in one building in which there is also the government buildings, post office and a grocery store (I hear...). So folks don't even need to leave the building during the cold months... The rain was persistent and so I ended up leaving and did not stay in Whittier. I returned to Anchorage and took refuse in a motel!
