Winter Hike Camp Dec 2022

Dr. Jon D. Morey led a group of participants to the Manistee River Trail near Marilla, MI for a weekend Campaign.

We hiked into camp in the dark (as always), set up minimalist tarp shelters on the beautiful bluffs of the MRT. The wind was HOWLING that night! All day Saturday was spent hiking along the river, stopping for lessons on Fieldcraft, Native American lore, and Health & Happiness advice. Of special interest was the opportunity to learn safe descents and ascents using the standard issue Buddy Line (basically a 24' section of rope and some paracord that everybody should have with them in their kits)

Winter is traditionally a time for rest, recovery, and preparation so we hiked a leisurely 9 miles before setting up camp again. (This time a bit more sheltered from the wind).

The evening fire provided much need warmth and opportunity for comradery.

This was an intermediate level camp as it did require the participants to carry all their gear on their backs over natural terrain for short periods WHILE working to combat the effects of a windy Northern Michigan Winter.
