If a person hangs in an upright position for a period of time, venous pooling occurs in the vessels of the legs due to the effect of gravity, which may lead to a loss of a large part of the circulating blood volume and relative hypovolaemia.
If the person is also immobile, there will be no muscular pump to provide venous return, with reduced cerebral perfusion resulting in cerebral hypoxia.
OSHA says that a period of 30 minutes in which a person hangs from the beginning of the fall is enough to lead to death.
It requests an "immediate" rescue of the suspended personnel
OSHA refers to when it says that a fall protection plan must contain plans for a "prompt" rescue.
However, it did not specify the minimum period of time required to save the worker from suspension trauma, because there are multiple factors affecting the determination of the period of time.
In the Canadian specifications and others, they stipulate as a recommendation that the time period be less than 5 minutes, unless there is a Suspension Trauma Strap (STS).
"Time in suspension should be limited to under five minutes. Longer suspensions must have foothold straps or means for putting weight on the legs."
The key here on the ground is to refer to the Rescue Plan for the site, and in light of the previous drills.
