Preface
Truth is one, and it is eternal. It may be, and is, many-sided, but the different aspects of it do not conflict, and age does not impair it.
It is now thirty years since the articles forming the little volume called “Things to Come”1 were first issued in the Northern Intelligencer under the editorship of the late much esteemed Donald Ross.
The truth in them was nearly all new to the natives of Aberdeenshire, and the great reviving that had taken place in the North under the preaching of Reginald Radcliffe, Brownlow North, Duncan Mathieson, and many others had prepared the hearts of the Christians to receive truth straight from the Book apart from human authority or tradition.
Although it is so long since it was written, the Author sees little in it that calls for revision, and the tenth edition is now issued almost exactly as it appeared at first.
Any who will be at pains to read the chapters through with an open Bible to refer to at every page will surely be convinced that the Hope of the Church is not death but the coming again of the Lord Jesus; that this blissful event awaits no long fulfillment of prophecy, but may take place at any moment; and that the only becoming attitude for the saints today is that of the Thessalonians of old who served the living and True God while they waited for His Son from Heaven,

“I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
“Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you
THINGS TO COME.
“He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and He shall shew it unto you.”
John 16:12-14
