Suggested Instrumental Combinations:

While originally intended for a “standard” brass quintet of two trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba, the instrumentation is quite flexible. Below are the included options for each individual part. Also note that flugelhorns may substitute for trumpets in the middle “Kyrie” movement. Parts are included for E-flat, C, and B-flat trumpet, with the flugelhorn transposed to B-flat, as well as in the key consistent with the rest of the part.

1. Trumpet in Eb (optional Cornet) (flugel. in Eb)
1. Trumpet in Eb (optional Cornet) (flugel. in Bb)
1. Trumpet in C (optional Cornet) (flugel. in C)
1. Trumpet in C (optional Cornet) (flugel. in Bb)
1. Trumpet in Bb (optional Cornet/Flugelhorn)
2. Trumpet in C (optional Cornet) (flugel. in C)
2. Trumpet in C (optional Cornet) (flugel. in Bb)
2. Trumpet in Bb (optional Cornet/Flugelhorn)
3. Horn in F
3. Horn in Eb
3. Baritone T.C. (optional Euphonium)
3. Baritone B.C. (optional Trombone/Euphonium)
3. Trombone Tenor Clef
4. Trombone (opt. Euphonium/Baritone B.C.)
4. Euphonium T.C. (opt. Baritone)
5. Tuba (opt. Bass Trombone)
5. Tuba in Eb
5. Tuba in Bb

Program Notes:

The “Liturgical Suite” was the result of a yearly composition challenge I do where I take random suggestions of instruments and ensembles from followers on my social media sites and for the entire month write a piece each day given the suggested instrumental combinations. In the 2021 “Month of Miniatures” I had three brass trio suggestions, so I composed a suite using the texts of the Latin Mass as a musical outline. The music, while instrumental, uses three texts from the Latin Mass---the Sanctus, Kyrie, and Gloria---as it’s basis. I envisioned the material to be performed by a flexible instrumentation of brass and possible even woodwind instruments, and here it is re-scored for a larger brass quintet configuration. The “Sanctus,” meaning “holy” in Latin has an exalted, declamatory style, and the middle movement, “Kyrie,” is more somber which corresponds to the titular phrase, “Lord have mercy.” The final movement, “Gloria,” is playful and bouncy with a scherzando feeling.
