Ankara demands ships prove insurance coverage to pass through Straits

1. Turkey says it has started requesting proof of insurance from tankers loaded with Russian crude oil as Moscow expressed concern about a build-up of oil tankers in the Bosphorus Strait.

At least 20 oil tankers queueing off Turkey face more delays to cross from Russia’s Black Sea ports to the Mediterranean as operators race to adhere to new Turkish insurance rules added in advance of a G7 price cap on Russian oil, industry sources said on Tuesday, as cited by the Reuters news agency.

The straits are among the world's most difficult waterways to traverse, as ships must deal with strong currents, sharp turns, and varying weather conditions. While the 1936 Montreux Convention guarantees freedom of navigation for merchant vessels, the passage is also regulated to uphold Türkiye's security.

2. Moscow and Ankara keep in touch over the maritime traffic issue off the Turkish coast, where a number of oil tankers have stuck, measures will be taken if needed, a source familiar with the situation told Sputnik on Thursday.

"There is coordination on this issue (with the Russian side). All necessary measures are taken and will be taken if necessary. That is all I can say now.

Media, for some reason, present the problem as catastrophic, there is nothing like that," the source said.

On December 1, Turkey started requiring from oil shippers crossing the Bosphorus Strait and the Dardanelles a letter from an insurer confirming that the vessel is covered by the necessary Protection and Indemnity Insurance (P&I). On Monday, media reported that some 19 oil tankers were stuck in the Turkish straits after new restrictions that had gone into effect as part of the collective West's price cap on Russian oil.

Ранее издание Financial Times со ссылкой на нефтетрейдеров, посредников и отслеживающие суда сервисы сообщало, что затор из нефтяных танкеров образовался у турецких берегов после начала действия потолка стоимости на российскую нефть из-за требований Турции предоставлять сведения о страховании. Анкара с 1 декабря ввела доптребование по страхованию к танкерам с сырой нефтью для прохода через проливы Турции. Так, Анкара требует от страховщиков письмо, подтверждающее предоставление судну P&I-страхования (Protection and Indemnity Insurance).

"Координация по этому поводу (с российской стороной. – Прим. РЕН ТВ) есть. Это все, что я сейчас могу сказать", – заявил источник информагентства.

Он добавил, что все нужные меры для решения данной проблемы примут в случае необходимости.
