Today I want to tell something.
This is a very horrific legend from Europe. Or rather from Germany.
But not in all of Germany, but in northern Germany on the North Frisian islands of Sylt and Amrun.
I want to tell you about the gongers. One speaks of a gonger when one means a revenant. These are the killed or deceased who keep coming back.
But now we come to the story I want to tell you. A story that is be true.
It was in 1896 when the story begins. It is said to have been a cold, rainy evening in November. Father Enno and mother Harmina were married with three children. A son Dammo 11 years and 2 daughters Bilke 6 and Lentje 9 years. The father was a fisherman and always came home late in the evening. The mother kept the house clean and looked after the upbringing of the children. When the father came home in the evening, the table was already set. All were there only the smallest was missing. Bilke hadn't come to supper on time and her mother was starting to worry. The father was still busy undressing and putting more wood for the fire after he had put down his catch. It was already getting dark outside. Harmina asked Enno if he had seen Bilke. Bilke often played on the beach and waited for her father. But Enno said no. As Harmina ran through the house and from window to door and back, getting more and more agitated, Enno calmed his wife down. But she couldn't be calmed down and after a short time they both went out to look for Bilke. They first went to the beach and called loudly for Bilke. But nothing could be heard except for the sea and the wind. They walked the entire beach and even after two hours they couldn't find Bilke. In tears, Harmina searched on and on. She searched the whole village while Enno searched the whole area, leaving no stone unturned. It was exasperating. In the meantime, others from the village came to help for search after they noticed that Bilke was missing. But no matter how hard they searched, they found nothing. Bilke seemed swallowed up by the ground. In the days and weeks that followed, people kept looking for Bilke. But after a while you stopped searching. Hope faded and it was assumed that Bilke must have drowned in the sea. It was a difficult time for the family. Harmina in particular could not recover and fell seriously ill. The grief had broken her, so that exactly one year later she died of grief. Exactly one year after Bilke disappeared. Enno was now alone with his 2 children who he had to take care of. It wasn't all that easy as he also went fishing every day to feed the family. So Dammo and Lentjie had to take over the chores around the house. It was a very tough time, but we made ends meet.
Six years later, after Harmina passed away, strange things happened. One night around 2:00 a.m., there was suddenly a loud knock on the door. Enno and the children, who have now grown up, were awakened by the knocking. Everyone looked at each other in amazement. Who's knocking on the door so late? Enno got up, put something on and went to the window next to the door. He carefully looked out and was surprised because nobody was to be seen. It was also very brightly lit by the bright full moon, so that you could see everything very well. So he went to the door and opened it with a squeaky creak. looked outside When he the door, he saw nothing. He carefully walked out in front of the house and noticed as he walked out that the soles of his feet were getting wet and cold.

He was standing in a small puddle which was very strange as it hadn't rained in days. When he turned around, he was startled at first, because wet stains were also visible on the door.

They were almost 1m above ground level. Where did these wet spots come from? Who put this there? And why would anyone knock loudly in the middle of the night and leave wet stains? Enno took a finger and touched the damp stain on the door. When he sniffed it and then carefully licked it, he realized that the water was salty. It seemed to be sea water. Enno went back into the house and after a short time the situation calmed down and everyone slept soundly again. The next morning almost everything was forgotten and everyone went about their business to get through the day. The next night at around 2:00 a.m. everyone was startled when there was another loud knock on the door. Everyone looked at each other in horror. Lentjie, who was now 16 years old, was shaking all over. Everyone was afraid, including Enno, but he tried to hide it. He went back to the window by the door. Again he saw nothing. He slowly opened the door and looked out. It was scary and yet there was nothing he could do. So everyone lay down again and after a while everyone fell asleep again. The next day was as always. No special occurrences. The next few nights were like the two creepy nights before...
