flash flood kills South African worshipers during the religious ceremony along the river

Members of the congregation were lost during a service besides the Jukskei River due to a flash flood.

According to authorities, a flash flood in Johannesburg, South Africa, killed at least nine members of a Church congregation on Saturday as they were attending a religious service next to a river.

While seven further victims were discovered on a search and recovery expedition on Sunday, the remains of two victims were discovered on Saturday.

The Jukskei River, which flows through eastern Johannesburg, is commonly used by churches and other religious institutions for events like baptisms.

"In the past three months, Johannesburg has experienced a lot of rain, and the majority of the river streams are currently full.

Our inhabitants would be enticed to visit these river streams, especially worshippers who often engage in these kinds of rites "Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesman for Johannesburg Emergency Services, stated during a press conference on Sunday.

"Our advice to them is to use caution when they do these rites,"
