In 1989 Ruger sold out Gun Owners over the Assault Weapon Ban and Received Exemptions as a Reward 🔫

One of the main reasons I would never own a Ruger: William B. Ruger made suggestions (such as magazine capacity limits) and features that should be restricted for the original Assault Weapons Ban legislation signed into law by then DemocRAT president Bill Clinton (the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994). The original Assault Weapons Ban sunsetted while George W. Bush was in office on September 13, 2004. Joe Biden is trying to bring it back and make it permanent.

As a "thank you" for his support, suggestions and help crafting the Assault Weapons Ban, the proposed legislation was carefully assembled in a manner that made his Mini 14 and Mini 30 rifles exempt from the 'banned list'. Ruger's suggestion that magazines over 15 rounds should be banned was adopted but modified to 10 rounds.

This was strategic by Ruger. He knew their Mini 14 (5.56x45mm) and Mini 30 (7.62x39mm) would sell like hotcakes if AR15's and AK47's were banned, since his 2 rifles were chambered for the same ammunition.

Before the Assault Weapons Ban, Ruger limited the sale of his 20rd and 30rd magazines for his Ruger rifles from the public and only sold them to distributers for Law Enforcement. People could still legally buy them 2nd hand, or from a Police Officer who wanted to make a quick buck, but Ruger personally believed that civilians should not possess magazines with a capacity over 15rds. 5rd and 10rd magazines were a standard for the Mini 14 and Mini 30 in the civilian market.

It stands to note, that the NRA also supported the Assault Weapons Ban and Magazine Capacity limits. The NRA also supported the 1986 ban on machineguns owned by civilians (if the machinegun was manufactured after 1986, civilians could not own, manufacture or import it), signed into law by then Republican president Ronald Reagan. This was also a strategic move by the NRA, as their leadership comprised of the largest group of Registered Machinegun owners in the US and they knew prices would skyrocket as a result, making them richer than they already were. They were correct.

Unlike the NRA, 'Gun Owners of America' opposed every single gun law pushed by legislators and uses your donations to file lawsuits and overturn unconstitutional gun laws in court.
