The York County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a car chase ended in a deputy-involved shooting Tuesday afternoon.

Deputies say the afternoon started with a stole vehicle call in the Baxter area of Fort Mill.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as 25-year-old Tyshawn Malik Benjamin, kept driving during a traffic stop, leading to a chase. The pursuit appeared to have ended for a moment at the Rock Hill Chicken King before the suspect took off again, eventually coming to stop in a CVS parking lot on Cherry Road.

Officials say the male driver then drove into two different deputies’ patrol cars.

When the man rammed the patrol car the second time, with the deputy standing at the corner of the door in close proximity, YCSO said the deputy fired three shots, hitting the suspect.

When we asked if Sheriff Kevin Tolson backed his deputy’s actions, he said yes.

“So far from the information I [have], 100%. This is what happens when you take a 2,500-pound bullet and you come at police officers.”

The suspect was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. He died later that night.

The next day, Sheriff Tolson held a press conference.

“It all happened quickly,” he said.
