NYC Public Service Retirees and Workers Rally Against Threat to Health Care Benefits at City Hall

On October 12, 2022, retired New York City public employees and current city workers rallied at City Hall to protest potential changes to their health care benefits. The protesters called on City Council members to reject an amendment to City of New York Administrative Code, section 12-126.

The New York City Organization of Public Service Retirees sued the city in 2021 over plans to shift retirees from Medicare to a private Medicare Advantage plan, and the court ruled in their favor early this year on the basis of City of New York Administrative Code, section 12-126.

In a closed-door meeting on September 8, the Municipal Labor Committee (MLC), a coalition of New York City unions including the UFT, voted to approve an amendment to section 12-126 that, if passed by City Council, could open the door to a reversal of the retirees' victory in court and an increase in their health care costs.

The city has appealed the decision, and the case is due back in court on October 27.
