This is a view of the Indianapolis 500 from the paddock. Indianapolis Indiana is the location of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The track hosts the annual Indy 500 and is over 100 years old.
The track was built in 1909 and early races were driven on a tar and gravel surface. The track was later paved with over 3.2 million bricks, and became known as the brickyard.
The first Indy 500 was held on May 30th 1911 and was won by Ray Harroun. He was the only driver in the race with out a ride along mechanic. Harroun won a $25,000 dollar prize in front of an estimated 80,000 spectators in attendance.
Later winners include AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr, Bobby Unser, Mario Andretti, Rick Mears, and Helio Castroneves. NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt Jeff Gordon Tony Stewart and Kyle Bush have won the brickyard. They drive very fast at this track and speeds are currently nearing 230 mph.
