Monitor lizard is a general name for a family of lizards belonging to the genus Varanus. Komodo aka Varanus komodoensis is included in it. That's why, technically, the Komodo dragon is a species of monitor lizard. Of course, they are the largest species, reaching 3 meters in length and weighing more than 130 kg.
