On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine by launching an attack with explosive ordinance and hitting several residential buildings. By the 25th, the invading army had taken control of all of the Chernobyl exclusion zone and began to attack Ukrainian capital city while facing high resistance from both the Ukrainian military and a makeshift militia. On February 26 in response, President Joe Biden authorized US State Department to provide up to $350 million worth of weapons from US stockpiles to Ukraine.

On February 26, 2022, the deputy head of Russia's Security Council issued a warning that Moscow may retaliate to Western sanctions by withdrawing from the most recent nuclear arms treaty with the US, severing diplomatic ties with Western nations, and freezing their assets.

The U.S., during a meeting with the U.N. on February 28, 2022, requested that the Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya remove 12 Russian diplomats from the U.S.. This request was due to claims of abuse of power by these diplomats.

At the United Nations on Friday, March 4, 2022, the United States and its allies denounced Russia's shelling and seizure of Europe's largest nuclear power facility overnight in Ukraine. Some insisted that Moscow not allow such an action to happen again. On March 13, President Biden's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned of a full-fledged NATO response if Russia were to hit any part of NATO territory.

According to a poll conducted by NPR/Ipsos between March 18-21, 2022, only 36% of Americans approved of the Biden administration's response to Russia's invasion into Ukraine. On April 28th President Biden asked for $33 billion dollars from congress to continue helping support Ukraine including $20 billion dollars worth of weapons.

On July 6, 2022, the speaker of the Russian Parliament threatened to retake Alaska from the United States. On September 21, 2022, President Putin threatened NATO and the US during a speech on Russia's nuclear arsenal. He stated that if any nation attempted to challenge Russia's "territorial integrity," they would use every weapon at their disposal.
