The University of Malaga has developed a device that turns sound into touch, allowing deaf people to ‘hear’ music. The new system ‘hacks’ the nervous system to create ‘tactile illusions’ that can provoke an emotional response. Interestingly, it causes different emotional responses than the original music, although generally the sensations were considered more pleasant than the music ever was.

‘What we want to achieve in the long term is for people who do not hear to be able to “listen” to music,’ said lead author Paul Remache. He hopes that the technology, in addition to helping the deaf hear music, will have applications in therapy and pain management.
