Essential for DNA replication.
Maintains a healthy brain.
Important in brain development of the fetus.
And finally, it balances the homocysteine levels in blood.
So, a deficiency of folate may lead to impairment of above-mentioned processes.
Folate deficiency in pregnancy is associated with fetal growth retardation & neural tube defects.
Folate deficiency in adults can lead to anemia, gastrointestinal problems, neuropsychiatric manifestations etc.
Folate deficiency can result from inadequate dietary intake, diseases that inhibit folate absorption, certain drugs, and congenital disorders.
It may also be secondary to vitamin B12 deficiency.
Additional causes include alcoholism, pregnancy and lactation, hemolytic anemia, and dialysis.
