Famous COTSWOLDS Market Town || Stow On The Wold Walk, English Countryside

Stow On The Wold has mellow Cotswold stone houses, shops, pubs and hotels surrounded by the world famous Cotswold's countryside. At nearly 800ft, Stow is the highest of the Cotswold towns.

The word 'wold' as in Cotswold means hills, so Stow-on-the-Wold simply means Holy Place on the Hill.

Stow On The Wold has a long history, it probably dates from a prehistoric fortified settlement on top of the hill, and had a special importance in the English Civil War, the last battle was fought close by in Donnington back in 1646. St Edward’s Church, was used as a prison for the defeated Royalist troops, as it was the only lockable building in the town.

On my walk you can see some very narrow alleys, its is said that these were intentionally built narrow and winding as a way to control and count sheep.

The Market Square is large and impressive and, surrounded by houses, shops, hotels and inns all built in the local Cotswold stone. It gives the feeling of being the focus of town life over many centuries.

Currently the only market to take place in the square is the monthly Farmers' Market, on the first Thursday of the month, very popular with both visitors and locals alike.
