Catholic Church Part 2 The Middle Ages to Renaissance

In western Christendom, the Catholic Church remained a central institution throughout the Middle Ages. It controlled vast amounts of wealth – it was the largest landowner in Europe, and the people paid a tenth of their income – the “tithe” – to the Church each year and in taxes levied by monarchs for the good of church endeavors!

The Catholic Church had a significant and enduring impact in the Middle Ages. Every area of society was influenced by Catholic doctrines and Vatican politics, from the design of monasteries to the conflicts fought by kings. Even when missionaries replaced pagan rites with Catholic beliefs and festivals of Christian saints, monks assisted in the preservation of the great works of literature from the classical world. Moreover, the medieval Church supported the arts with increasing affluence.

The Christian Church unquestionably influenced the Renaissance's artistic movement. Without the Church, there would have been no art; it was the inspiration behind every creative idea.
