South Korea’s demographic crisis: young people opt out of having kids

With one of the world’s lowest fertility rates, South Korea’s population is expected to shrink to 38 million in 2070, the country’s official statistics agency revealed in September 2022. The latest figure for 2022 showed that there were only 0.81 births per woman in South Korea, as young couples choose not to have kids amid a bleak job market, expensive housing prices, inequality and other social issues.
