Why Qatar is the BIGGEST LOSER of the World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicked off last week and although we do not yet know who will win the tournament, we can already identify its biggest loser; that would be the host nation of Qatar.

Qatar opened the tournament with a match against Ecuador, which it lost. The tiny gas-rich nation earned the unfortunate distinction of becoming the first host nation to lose its opening match. But that is not why Qatar is the tournament’s biggest loser.

Rather, it’s the fact that the Qatari government has spent nearly $300 billion on the World Cup, only to receive condemnation from much of the international community. Ashton explains
