It was long thought that prehistoric rats were no bigger than modern-day rodents. But a new study has revealed that some species of these ancient rodents were actually the size of horses. The Phoberomys pattersoni rat, for example, could weigh up to 590 kilograms, while the Josephoartigasia monesi rat weighed in at 907 kilograms – about the same as a bison. These size estimates have been debated for years, but Russell Engelman, a paleontologist at Case Western Reserve University, has finally found a way to accurately calculate them.In his study, published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, Engelman compared the posterior joints of skulls from Phoberomys, Josephoartigasia, and other extinct rat species with those of contemporary animals.Due to the scarcity of fossils, it is difficult to determine the exact size of prehistoric rats. However, Engelman was able to use Phoberomys' femur and other bones to get an accurate estimate. The findings of this study are sure to excite scientists and history buffs alike – giving us a whole new perspective on these fascinating creatures.

Prehistoric rats were much larger than previously thought, according to a new study. The Phoberomys pattersoni rat, for example, could weigh up to 590 kg – about the size of a modern horse. The Josephoartigasia monesi rat was even bigger, weighing in at 907 kg – or around the same as a bison. These size estimates have been hotly debated for some time. But now, thanks to the work of paleontologist Russell Engelman from Case Western Reserve University, we finally have a reliable way of calculating their size. Engelman did this by comparing the posterior joint of the skulls of Phoberomys, Josephoartigasia, and other extinct rat species with those of contemporary animals. Due to the scarcity of fossils, it is difficult to determine the exact size of prehistoric rats. However, Engelman's research gives us the best indication yet of just how big these creatures were – and it's sure to change our understanding of them significantly.
