Suba Punyathanam or Punyahavachanam

A Suba Punyathanam or Punyahavachanam is a Vedic ritual that is performed to purify the house after the birth of a child, during Grahaprevesam, and after completing the death rituals (on the 13th or 16th day), as well as before the annual 'Thithi' or 'Sirartham' of the deceased. Other times when this ritual is performed include: during Grahaprevesam; after the completion of the death ritual A 'Kalasam' (pot) is filled with water, and then the " Pavamana Suktham" is chanted inside of the brass pot in order to invite God Varuna, who is the God of the ocean, rivers, and water (Veda Manthras).

The coconut is the "Shriphala," which stands for the head of the Supreme and represents divine awareness. The pot represents Mother Earth. Water is the life-giver since it represents the primordial water from which creation began. Green leaves stand for fertility and life. Therefore, "Kalasam" refers to the divine energy, which is responsible for giving everyone existence. The water that flowed from the "Kalasam" all over the home and on the family members was meant to purify the spirit while also cleaning the environment.
