A missing passenger who went overboard from the Carnival Valor was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after spending at least 15 hours in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Carnival Cruise Line tells WWL-TV that the 28-year-old man was reported missing around noon on Thursday while the ship was on its way to Cozumel. The missing man was with his sister at a bar Wednesday evening and left around 11 p.m. to use the restroom. The man did not return to his stateroom that evening, and his sister reported him missing the next morning.

The cruise line said it made announcements over the ship's intercoms, and passengers reported security searching the ship with a photo of the missing man on their phones. The Valor then began retracing his route to support search and rescue efforts.
