Canada: Federal govt unveils climate adaptation strategy – November 24, 2022

Bill Blair, the minister of emergency preparedness, holds a news conference in St. Peter’s Bay, Prince Edward Island, for the release of Canada’s National Adaptation Strategy, which aims to prepare the country for the impacts of climate change. He is joined virtually by Ginette Petitpas Taylor, the minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. The federal government is committing $1.6 billion in new funding over the next five years for the country's first ever climate adaptation strategy. The plan focuses on five priority areas: improving health, building and maintaining resilient public infrastructure, protecting nature and biodiversity, supporting the economy, and reducing the impact of climate-related disasters. The government is releasing as well the Canada Adaptation Action Plan. Also taking part in the announcement are Lawrence MacAulay (the minister of veterans affairs and MP for Cardigan); Steven Myers (P.E.I.'s minister of environment, energy and climate); and Roderick Gould Jr. (Chief of the Abegweit First Nation), as well as University of Prince Edward Island representatives Judy Clark (elder in residence), Greg Keefe (president), and Aitazaz Farooque (associate dean of the university's school of climate change and adaptation).
