WASHINGTON (TND) — Stephen Anthony Smith, the sports television personality that fans love to hate, has yet another spicy take the internet has latched onto.
This time, though, it's not about who is or isn't making the playoffs, or which NFL QB is Super Bowl-worthy. It's about his paycheck.
Smith declared that he is actually "underpaid" by ESPN. The sports talk show host made the claim while on the set of "First Take," his own ESPN show.
Smith reportedly makes around $12 million a year in total compensation. His claim that he's underpaid was part of a larger conversation surrounding athlete compensation and why Major League Baseball struggles to attract Black athletes to its ranks.
Just like women are underpaid compared to male counterparts, Blacks are underpaid compared to white counterparts,” Smith said on his show. “I’m not talking about me, even though I got news for you, I am underpaid compared to some people on television and what they get paid. But that’s a subject for another day, I ain’t apologizing for that to a damn soul. I am underpaid."
A millionaire claiming that he isn't paid enough may rightly ruffle the feathers of Americans struggling due to record inflation, but as AwfulAnnouncing.com reports, Smith may have a point. He is, to some, the face of ESPN.
Stephen A. Smith is the face of ESPN, he is the host and architect of their premier studio show, First Take," AwfulAnnouncing.com's Brandon Contes writes. "Smith’s content feeds ESPN’s social media platforms, he’s a lead ambassador for the company, he’s featured on NBA Countdown and recently launched a new show, Stephen A’s World."
Considering the hours Smith puts in at the network and the amount of content he creates, his... salary is underpaid especially when compared to other sports media personalities," Contes continued in his report.
Smith signed his current five-year contract with ESPN in 2019. Since then, there have been many notable higher-paying contracts signed by other personalities. For example, former NFL star Tony Romo is making $17 million a year with CBS. ESPN signed play-by-play announcer Joe Buck for almost $15 million per year, and Troy Aikman for $18 million per year to be voices for Monday Night Football.
These numbers are apparently already on Smith's mind as he heads toward the end of his current contract with ESPN.
I am paid well, but I know I am worth more. During a negotiation, you get what you can get, and you move on," Smith told "The 10 Questions With Kyle Brandt Podcast" back in May 2021.
Smith is reportedly considered one of the highest paid sports broadcasters in the world at the moment.
His $12 million per yeartotal compensation comes from his $8 million contract with ESPN and another "$4 million-per-year production" contract with the same company, the New York Post reported in 2021.
