COVID-19: Schools and restaurants close in Beijing; outbreaks spread across China

China is battling multiple COVID-19 flare-ups across the country. Outbreaks have been reported from Zhengzhou to Chongqing. Case numbers have topped 26,800, nearing the country's daily peak in April. The city of Guangzhou has reported the largest outbreak, with more than 7,800 infections. A five-day lockdown has been ordered for its most populous district, Baiyun. In Beijing, schools, restaurants, gyms, beauty salons and other facilities have been forced to shut. Several residential compounds have also been cordoned off and locked down as cases tick higher. The capital reported 962 new infections.
