Java, the largest island in Indonesia, was shaken by a severe earthquake that destroyed hundreds of buildings and forced people onto the streets of the city in search of protection.

According to the US Geological Survey, the Monday's magnitude 5.9 earthquake had its epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers in the Cianjur district of West Java province (6.2 miles).
