The Khortitsa Island. When we say "island", an island in the sea immediately comes to mind. The Khortitsa Island is located between two branches of the Dnieper River in Zaporozhye.

August 1941. The Germans, having captured the island of Khortitsa, washed on both sides by the Dnieper, are approaching Zaporozhye. On the island, a small part of the Soviet troops, cut off from the main formation, is waging a bloody, stubborn battle . The teenagers of Khortitsa helped the Soviet fighters sneak onto the island unnoticed, conduct reconnaissance of German locations, and swim many times back and forth with intelligence data under Nazi fire.

To this day, the names and fates of most of those young heroes have not been restored.
