The subtropical marshes of North Carolina and South Carolina's East Coast are home to the carnivorous Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). It uses the terminal region of each of the plant's leaves as a trap for its prey, primarily insects and arachnids, which is activated by small hairs on their inner surfaces known as "trigger hairs" or "sensitive hairs."
