First train to Mykolaiv after Kherson is liberated 🇺🇦

This is the first train arriving at the station of the Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv since the Russian invasion of the country on February 24, 2022. This first train, from the capital of Kyiv, brought passengers and freight to the city on the border of the earlier occupied Kherson oblast. Because the occupiers were nearby, it was not deemed safe to run trains to Mykolaiv at all.

But after the Russian occupiers were forced to retreat from large parts of Kherson Oblast across the Dnipro river, it didn’t take long for the Ukrainian state-owned railway company to pick up a schedule to one of the largest cities in Ukraine. On November 14, late in the evening, the first train left the station of Kyiv for Mykolaiv.

This was less than two days after the city of Kherson, some 50 kilometers to the southeast, was liberated. It’s likely that this newly liberated city will also see Ukrainian trains running again soon, as the head of the Ukrainian railway company has visited Kherson station already.
