The white-tail deer population in New York State is notoriously over carrying capacity, which results in over-browsing of the native plants, trees seedlings, and planted garden beds. One of the more common methods folks use to exclude deer is fencing around individual garden beds and plants. However, given that the land we are stewarding was a former nursery, which already had a 12-acre deer fence—we want to utilize that to protect a good portion of the land. Unfortunately the fence is broken in quite a few areas, so it will need repairs.

Ultimately we want to extend the deer exclusion fence around 20 acres, so it can include a larger portion of forest to provide more forest recruitment and regeneration, but it is far too expensive at this stage.
