My cat used to do this, I don't know why either he was always well treated, I think it is some security issue. I made it a point to carefully pull him out and give him affection. Hard to do when he would claw and feign biting, (when he did get his teeth on me he would do these weird soft gnaws). After a while he quit hiding under the bed and threatening my toes. I now have a very affectionate, confident cat.
