Morita Therapy: Theory, practice, and counselling applications of Japanese Morita therapy

Morita therapy is a unique system of psychotherapy and personal growth, developed in Japan in the 1920's. It is best known as a special treatment for the "shinkeishitsu" or nervous personality with anxiety-related problems, but it offers practical value in general counselling applications across cultures. Its philosophy and practice have been compared to Zen, cognitive-behavioural therapy, and existential therapies. Clients of Morita therapy learn to overcome anxiety and "inconvenient feelings" by embracing it without controlling it and by focussing life energy on constructive action and appreciation of richness of life experience without ego-full management of affect or unproductive self-absorption.

This 3-hour workshop introduces participants to the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings and cultural aspects of Morita therapy as well as the practice of its original residential approach and recently developed counselling applications. There will be some experiential learning activities. Participants will be invited to explore similarities and differences between Morita and Western psychotherapies.

Educational Objectives:
1) To understand the theory and philosophy behind Morita therapy.
2) To experience Morita therapy and learn how to apply it to counselling. 3) To evaluate the similarities and differences between Morita therapy and Western psychotherapies.
