The Board of Education listened for more than 2 and a half hours today to testimony on whether three students…one from Mann Junior High and two from Crawford High…should be transferred to Snyder Continuation School. The boys, all 14 years of age, Ken Pernicano, Larry McSeaton and Norman Lombardo, refused to cut their Beatle-type hair in defiance of school regulations because they said it was part of their rock and roll band uniform. Don Clark, county deputy counsel, represented the school administration. He called as witnesses Eugene Brucker, Mann Junior High principal, and principal and vice-principal of Crawford High. The case established for the boys by their attorney, Conrad Caldwell, was based on the promise the boys would keep their hair trimmed as displayed this afternoon; it would be a hardship to go to Snyder; they did not create disturbances because of their hair and that their hair is part of their uniform. The school’s position was taken by secondary school superintendent Dr. Dwight Twist who said this was not a penalty for the boys but rather an opportunity for specialized educational (the rest of the script is missing).
