Performance Notes:

First performed in 1742, Handel’s oratorio was moderately successful initially, but grew in popularity over the centuries. This is a setting of movements 2 and 3 of the monumental work in which there are 53 movements in total. The text is from a Isaiah’s prophesy in which the coming of Messiah was foretold.
When performed without the benefit of the text, the music must still convey the story and/or the mood of that text. The first movement should be warm and calm, through the Con moto, at which the text, “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness..” appears. Here, the approach should take on a joyful and declamatory aspect, which carries through the entire second movement.

[Words: King James Bible (paraphrased by the composer)]

Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness; Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. (from Isaiah 40:1-3)

Ev’ry valley shall be exalted, and ev’ry mountain and hill made low; the crooked straight and the rough places plain. (from Isaiah 40:4)
