The 1936 Banking Royal Commission settled the debate over who is in charge of Australia's financial system, the government or the central bank?
The Royal Commission found for the principle that the government is in charge.
That principle has been eroded away, which is evident in LNP Senator Gerard Rennick's hard-hitting questions to the Reserve Bank of Australia about its refusal to hand over its communications with the Bank for International Settlements.
If the RBA can use this excuse to keep its discussions with the BIS and the world's other central banks secret from Parliament - discussions which impact Australia's financial system - then the government is not the final authority in the financial system.
