Kherson is named after Chersonesus, an ancient Greek colony that lived 2,500 years ago on the Crimean Peninsula - in 1778 Russian (well, Prussian) Empress Catherine the Great founded the region as part of the Russian Empire, bestowing the name KHERSON in honor of the original inhabitants - there's not much Ukrainian about it, besides being a generous GIFT of the former Empire.
