UPDATE 1: The number of victims of the explosion in the center of Istanbul has increased to 81. Two of them are in serious condition, said on Sunday, November 13, Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.

“The explosion killed six people. The number of wounded has increased to 81, the condition of two of them is assessed as serious, ”the Habertürk newspaper quotes him as saying.

UPDATE: A woman is suspected in the explosion in the center of Istanbul, who sat on a bench for 45 minutes, after which she got up and the explosion thundered. The corresponding statement was made by the Minister of Justice of Turkey Bekir Bozdag.

A bomb exploded on a popular pedestrian street in Istanbul on Sunday, killing six people, wounding dozens and sending people fleeing as flames rose.

Footage posted online showed ambulances, fire trucks and police at the scene on on Istiklal Avenue, a typically crowded thoroughfare popular with tourists and locals and lined with shops and restaurants. In one video, a loud bang could be heard and flames could be seen, as pedestrians turned and ran away. Social media users said shops were shuttered and the avenue closed down.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the blast a “treacherous attack” and said its perpetrators would be punished. In addition to the six dead, Erdogan said another 53 were wounded, according to information he received from the Istanbul governor.

According to the Yeni Safak daily, Istanbul’s prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation of the Istiklal blast and terror attack is considered as one of the theories.

According to Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya, the blast occurred in the Istiklal Caddesi street in the Beyoglu district at about 16:20 local time today. Several people were killed and injured.
