Your best bet when you're just getting started is to choose a smaller, harder species that matures quickly. Smaller birds are simpler to handle and require less care if they grow up quickly. Some birds' colouring can be used to establish their sex, but since parrots aren't sexually dimorphic (i.e., males and females are essentially alike), we advise buying your birds from reputable breeders.
