Major Thomas van Dalen (Ret) was an Infantry officer, who started his career at the Infantry School from where he was transferred to various units during his 13 years of service with the South African army. He was a staff member at 2SAI Bn Gp at Walvisbay, 3 SAI Bn in Potchefstroom, SA Army College as an officer instructor, Infantry School, and Group 42 in Lenz. He completed a number of operational deployments in Namibia (Southwest Africa at that stage) and Angola during the Bush War and was also frequently deployed in townships within South Africa. Major van Dalen specialized in urban warfare and is also a qualified COIN Urban instructor. He was transferred to Group 42 at Lenz in 1991 as the staff officer of military operations in Soweto until 1995. This is his story.
