The parrot or pelican is a water bird that has a pouch under its beak, and is part of the Pelecanidae bird family. Together with parrots, snakeskins, gannets, rock geese, and tuna, they form the order Pelecaniformes. Modern pelicans are found on all continents except Antarctica. They live generally in warm regions, and they are not found in the polar regions, deep seas, oceanic islands, and the South American continent.

The smallest bunch is the brown bunch (Pelecanus occidentalis) with a mass of only 2.75 kg, a body length of 106 cm and a maximum wingspan of 1.83 m. The largest pelican today is the Dalmatian undulate (Pelecanus crispus) with a mass of 15 kg and a length of 183 cm, with a wingspan of up to 3.5 m. The Australian Undan has the longest beak of any other bird.

Pelicans are good swimmers, with their legs being short and strong and webbed.
