Introduction: The Secret Obsession
The Secret Obsession is a novel written by French author Pierre Louÿs. The story is set in
the fictional city of Argos, where the protagonist, Duke Theseus, falls in love with a slave girl
called Athis.
The book was published in 1896 and it has been translated into English by Andrew Lang
(1898). The first edition of this translation was illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley.
Argos is a fictional city that seems to be based on Ancient Greece but it also includes
elements from other countries such as France and England. It is described as being located
at the foot of Mount Parnassus and near the river Eridanus.
Argos has been ruled for centuries by King Theseus who rules together with his wife Queen
Aithra. There are many slaves living in Argos including Athis who has been brought to Argos
from another country called Africa.
