Plane returns to Greece over terrorist threat 🇬🇷

Emirates flight EK 209 from Athens to New York was forced to turn around late on November 10, when over the Mediterranean Sea, after authorities in the United States tipped the Greek authorities over a suspicious passenger on board. The plane was then flanked by two fighter jets from the Hellenic Air Force and escorted back to Athens again, this time making sure to only fly over the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

After arrival, the plane was parked and passengers were taken from the plane one by one. The suspected terrorist was forced to stay in his or her seat during this evacuation. Media in Greece report that it was the CIA that sent the alert after the plane had already left Athens. Normally, a government agency in the United States would have given clearance based on the passenger manifest. So it’s assumed somewhere things got mixed up. The suspected passenger was not found on board eventually, further confirming a mix-up.

Passengers are expected to be able to continue their journey later today, November 11, 2022.
