Mixing rodeo, music, festivities, and religious devotion, the 65th Barretos International Rodeo gathers thousands of spectators in Barretos, São Paulo State, August 28, 2022.

Originally the rodeo, which has been held since 1956, only included horses, yet under U.S. influence bulls have become a main feature of the festival. Music concerts are also an essential part of the show, which attracts thousands of people every year. Traditionally, performances were mostly by Brazilian country artists, but in 2022 the event opened up by inviting artists from other musical genres, such as the great Forro Wesley Safadao and Funk DJ Lucas Beat.

The Brazilian flag, the national team T-shirt and other T-shirts in support of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro were visible all over the bleachers and in the arena, making it difficult at times to draw the line between officialdom and political demonstration. (AFP)
